Program Opportunities
Overview
With a TESOL minor, you can teach English to speakers of other languages. A combined program of the Modern Languages and English departments, TESOL appeals to students from many majors and opens career doors that include teaching abroad. All TESOL minors complete a practicum as well as courses in TESOL theory and language acquisition.

- The minor aligns with the standards for the Indiana license in English as a New Language, enhancing the skills and employability of MU teacher candidates.
Successful Graduates
Kendall Brown ’22: Kendall completed her TESOL practicum at the Learn More Center, N. Manchester, IN, where she assisted the principal teacher in planning and conducting lessons before being hired to teach English.
Lilyana Ortega ’22: Lily conducted her TESOL practicum at the Learn More Center, N. Manchester, IN, and will obtain an advanced degree in health professions. She will always try to find ways to teach ESL in communities where she can make a difference.
Victoria Heishman ’22: Victoria conducted a TESOL practicum via Zoom with Hokusei Gakuen University High School in Sapporo, Japan, where she observed and taught classes in advanced writing, reading and speaking.
Victoria Clark-Conrad ’21: Victoria taught ESL and lessons to prepare students for the (HSE) High School Equivalency Exam, among many other ESL duties during her practicum with the Learn More Center, N. Manchester, IN. She hopes to teach EFL in Mongolia one day.
Erin Brock ’21: While interning at the Learn More Center, N. Manchester, IN, Erin was promoted to lead English Instructor, a position she held two years. During that time, she also worked as an English Language Paraprofessional at Washington STEM Academy in Warsaw for one year. Erin is completing her MA in TESOL at Ball State University, where also as a teaching assistant for English composition classes. In addition, she is also assisting in a grant project to kickstart writing centers at local grade schools in Muncie.

Haylee Parrish ’18: Haylee conducted her practicum at the Learn More Center, N. Manchester, IN. Upon graduation, she was awarded a JET stipend that allowed her to teach as an ALT in Japan through 2022; when she returns to the US, Haylee plans to work in editing or else in the publication industry.
